September, 14th 2011 - September, 15th  2011

The conference .hist 2011 – Geschichte im digitalen Wandel is hosted by H-Soz-u-Kult and Clio-online, together with L.I.S.A. - The science portal of the Gerda Henkel Foundation at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

As part of the workshop report, "Networked Knowledge / Semantic Web", I will present current research of our group.

Abstract

The research group Agile Knowledge Engineering and Semantic Web (AKSW) at the University of Leipzig is dealing with methods for agile knowledge engineering and semantic integration of information on the web. Based on the Wikipedia extraction DBpedia the expanding of the Linked Open Data Cloud is on the main focus of our current research (LOD2). The semantic data-based Wiki OntoWiki, developed by the AKSW group is a basic tool for the publication of semantic information. OntoWiki is already used for historical scientific projects. One of this is the Catalogus Professorum Lipsiensis. In this workshop report, the collaborative development of an ontology, the collaborative information gathering and publishing of data with the help of OntoWiki is presented on the example of the Catalogus Professorum Lipsiensis.

The workshop with 22 participants from AKSW, BAdW, BSB, BMLO, Deutsches Museum, FAU Erlangen, GNM, ISGV and LMU took place on 27.6.2011 in the Historical College in Munich.

The representatives of AKSW (Thomas Riechert and Martin Brümmer) presented their project group and its key activities and responded to two recent projects:

  • LOD2 =  programs and algorithms to support a complete lifecycle Linked Data (extraction, storage and queries, creating and editing; link; enrichment; validation; evolution, search and navigation), and
  • PUBLINK =  consulting services to publish interesting Data collections as Linked Data.

The award-winning model "Catalogus Professorum Lipsiensis" was demonstrated from a technical point of view and a subsequent approach of coding and a first application for the implementation of metadata http://www.deutsche-biographie.de.

The approximately 46,000 biographies, 42,000 additional people and 12,000 sites / areas were converted into RDF. In the first approach, the vocabulary of the German National Library for the GND and adapted by a few Extended identifier. In addition to the representation in RDF + XML as a test of import offers a OntoWiki instance the ability to browse specifically to make SPARQL queries and also to show with the help of the Relationshipfinder relations covers two or more persons.

The prototype is being developed and expected to be published this year.
